The Centre provides legal assistance to individuals, groups and businesses during the biannual period (October to May) on a variety of legal issues, which you can explore below. Queen Mary has its own Legal Advisory Centre (LAC) that can provide support to students, staff and the public on a range of legal issues. Advice is provided by LAC`s student advisors under the supervision of qualified lawyers. Those who use this method will: Specialist industries such as `qlegal` and `Law for the Arts` are particularly attractive to East London`s fast-growing industries, located around the tech city`s digital businesses, and the creative industries around Shoreditch, Dalston and Hoxton are booming. Meanwhile, law in general has had particular resonance in one of the UK`s most socio-economically diverse districts, providing advice in various areas of law including housing, immigration, family, employment, data protection and company law. The team can advise families and/or guardians on their children`s special educational needs. This can range from advice on appeals, support for SEN schools to funding or travel matters. Its seven focus areas cover a wide range of legal support and provide advice to support individuals, groups and businesses on a range of issues: specialist clinics for those working in the creative industries who have a legal problem related to their work. The Queen Mary Legal Advice Centre (LAC) provides free and accessible legal advice to local communities in East London and the general public, thereby promoting access to justice in the community. Nicole came to the Queen Mary Legal Advice Centre because she was having a hard time coping with the anti-social behaviour that took place in an alley next to her apartment. Every day, she had to deal with rats, floods, fly dumps, illegal parking lots, fires, bystanders using Class A drugs and other anti-social behavior. As Nicole could not find the owner of the alley and the council refused to take responsibility for the problem, she sought help from the Queen Mary Legal Advice Centre.
We were able to advise Nicole on how to find the owner and explain that she had strong arguments against her for private and public harassment. With our help, she was able to write them a letter explaining the problem, outlining her legal responsibilities and asking to build a barrier to reduce the problems she was facing. After years of struggling to find a way to change her unacceptable living conditions, Nicole was finally able to talk to the owners, who have now agreed not only to install a gate, but also to pay for it in full. Social counsellors in the counselling service are regulated in accordance with the OISC guidelines on immigration advice. He had been with his ex-partner for 10 years and they had a child at the age of 8.
After the relationship breaks down, M. and G. and his ex-partner an informal arrangement whereby he would see his child two days a week. Mr G.`s ex-partner moved in with his new partner and gradually began to limit Mr G.`s contact with his child. She began to make excuses as to why he couldn`t see her child and planned the child`s extracurricular activities on the days they were supposed to see Mr. G. Prior to his appointment to the legal aid service, Mr G. had not seen his child for more than two months. We advised Mr.
G. on how he could obtain a childcare order for his child and how he could enforce the order if his ex-partner decided to restrict contact again. After his appointment, Mr. G. gave feedback in which he stated that he now felt safe to take action against his ex-partner, whereas previously he was unsure of his rights. By providing a free legal service to the local community, the Queen Mary Centre offers the opportunity to use its knowledge and teaching for the benefit of those living in the area where we operate and beyond. The Queen Mary Legal Advice Centre (BAC) provides free, accessible and client-centred counselling to the local community and the general public. Advice on a range of issues is provided by law and postgraduate students with the help of professional lawyers. Customers who use our service are usually members of the public and Queen Mary`s staff or students. We are able to advise on a wide range of different issues, with the aim of equipping our clients with the necessary legal knowledge and an indication of the feasibility of their case.
According to our recent survey, 100% of our customers would use us again and recommend our service to a friend. The Legal Advice Centre manages a number of community projects in Tower Hamlets and other areas of London. Through these projects, students involved in LAC have the opportunity to connect with the local community and teach them how to embrace the idea of “street law” and share their legal knowledge, raise awareness of the law and provide support to society at large.
