The Office of the Police Legal Adviser acts as legal adviser to the Chief of Police on the policy of the Department. In addition, the Office of the Police Legal Counsel provides legal advice to police personnel regarding state, federal and city orders, as well as updates and training on pending court decisions and other legal matters. The Police Law Office (PLB) provides internal legal advice to the Director and the Department. The Office ensures that the Department remains informed of current legal issues, legislative changes and case law that are of particular interest to enforcement. The Public Corruption and Criminal Conspiracy (PCS) sections of the Miami-Dade Police Department are responsible for investigating criminal misconduct by government officials, county employees, police officers, lobbyists, and private vendors doing business with Miami-Dade County.
In accordance with the laws of the State of Florida, PCS and CCS strive to promote integrity and lawful conduct within the Miami-Dade County Government and uphold our commitment to the citizens of Miami-Dade County, which is “Delivering Excellence Every Day.” The unit is an active partner laboratory that provides digital forensics services to the United States Secret Service, the Miami Electronic Crime Task Force and the Internet Crimes Against Children Working Group, in accordance with memorandums of understanding between the working groups and the CDMD. The Digital Forensics Unit provides a variety of digital forensic laboratory and crime scene support services to Miami-Dade County`s largest municipal, state, and federal law enforcement agencies. The Unit provides objective digital forensic laboratory investigation services, crime scene intervention services (in cases involving digital evidence) and digital network investigation services. The Digital Forensics Unit operates at 7 a.m. until 11 p.m., Monday to Friday. The Unit provides objective examination services for digital evidence seized during administrative investigations. They provide data recovery services for the MDPD in case of catastrophic failures and/or data corruption. This year, the Department received 185 applications from 145 agencies, for a total of 347 officers, assistants and soldiers. There were 39 states represented in the bid pool, which included states, premises, campuses, sheriffs and other types of agencies. The Unit contributes to improving the quality of public service expected of police officers and to promoting the sense of procedural justice that communities expect from their police services and civil servants. The camera footage allows the Miami-Dade Police Department to be transparent and open in its interactions with community members. The Unit also handles requests for public documents related to body cameras. The Attorney General`s Award recognizes state, local, tribal and territorial police officers, legislators and soldiers for their outstanding achievements in community policing. Every day, MDSPD officials strive to keep schools safe. As a father of school-aged children and police chief of a law enforcement agency in schools, I am grateful to be able to serve in two roles that allow me to see first-hand the importance of serving today`s youth. In addition to community support, our police service is ready to bridge the gap between law enforcement and our students. The Justice Department announced the winners in March, which included 18 law enforcement officials and lawmakers from 12 jurisdictions across the country. Sgt. Berardino and Perez were honored for their ongoing criminal investigation into a July 2020 shooting in Miami that killed a child and wounded another child and two adults. A ShotSpotter alert showed that 21 shots were fired on a Miami street. The investigation revealed that the victims were returning home from shopping and were shot as they got out of their car.
