Some people living in low-income households can get free legal help from legal aid offices. When you call the office, you will be asked questions about your income and that of other people in your home. Your income must meet current poverty guidelines for you to qualify. If you follow the guidelines, you will be asked what kind of legal problem you are experiencing. If that`s the kind of problem they can handle, you can talk to one of the lawyers or a paralegal. The Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee and the Cumberlands is a private, non-profit organization that provides free legal advice to low-income individuals. We do not initiate criminal proceedings. We only conduct civil cases in which you do not go to jail yourself. We take as many cases as possible. We are sorry that we do not have enough lawyers for everyone. It serves 48 counties from offices in Clarksville, Columbia, Cookeville, Gallatin, Murfreesboro, Nashville, Oak Ridge, and Tullahoma. The Legal Aid Society is funded in part by the United Way. Legal aid cannot help everyone with all legal problems. There are certain types of cases that legal aid does not handle, including criminal and fee-paying cases, such as car accidents, where you want to make the other person pay for your injuries or damage to your car. Bar associations, the Tennessee Access to Justice Commission, and legal and community aid organizations across the state support permanent legal clinics throughout the year. Legal aid agencies do not charge fees for legal assistance provided. You may have to pay court fees to take a case to court. You may also have to pay for other expenses, such as: Copies of records, court reporters, etc. However, you will not be charged for the lawyer`s or paralegal`s time or advice. Most legal aid agencies also have pro bono programs. Many private lawyers have agreed to provide free legal aid to low-income individuals through this program. Your case can be referred to a pro bono lawyer who will represent you free of charge under the pro bono program. At Legal Services, where I am a lawyer, our temporary disaster assistance program was launched after the March 2020 tornadoes to help those affected. In the months that followed, we helped many Middle Tennessee residents get the resources they needed to help them get back to normal life. We expect a similar increase in client numbers in the coming weeks – and Legal Aid will be more than willing to support them as well. We are open Monday to Friday from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm.

The Tennessee Uniform Residential Landlord Tenant Act (URLTA) is a good guide to help landlords and tenants understand their obligations and how to resolve certain situations. What can I do if I am evicted even if I comply with CDC policy, it didn`t matter to the judge or landlord? An unfortunate side effect of natural disasters is that they produce people who provide repair services – which could ultimately worsen the situation of a disaster victim. Homeowners in affected areas often receive flyers in the mail or are asked to go door-to-door if they need repairs. While some may be legitimate, many are not.
