For over 35 years, VLP and its network of volunteers have worked to make the legal system accessible to low-income Nebrascans who need information, support and representation from a Nebraska lawyer. Working with Legal Aid of Nebraska and other legal aid providers, VLP identifies unmet civil and legal needs to develop programs that facilitate access to justice in Nebraska and our justice system. VLP`s main areas of support are family law and consumer law. VLP does not assist in criminal matters, appeals or any other area of civil law. If you are eligible for legal aid but legal aid cannot help you, it can refer your application to VLP. Not all applications for legal aid can be made with a pro bono lawyer. The purpose of a self-help center is to educate and inform eligible low-income individuals about civil litigation in Nebraska courts. If your household income is less than 125% of the federal poverty income guidelines, you can meet with a pro bono attorney to get general information about the law and civil court procedures. Volunteers are not employees of the Nebraska State Bar Association Volunteer Lawyers Project, local bar associations, self-help center, or courts. The final decision on the types of cases and the number of cases that will be accepted by the immigration clinic rests with the faculty supervisor. There are no fees for attorneys` fees, but clients may have to pay a small administrative fee and may be liable for immigration or other legal fees imposed by immigration or a court if they do not qualify for a fee waiver. The Nebraska Immigration Legal Assistance Hotline (NILAH) provides a central hotline and resources for legal aid to low-income immigrants. Individuals requiring immigration legal assistance may contact NILAH to refer a non-profit immigration legal service provider who can best meet the appellant`s needs in the shortest possible time. Paralegals answer calls to the hotline, fill out confidential intake screening forms, and direct people to the right agency in their area. NILAH paralegals can speak to callers in their first language.
