Clinics and internships offer students the opportunity to gain practical legal skills and work on cases and projects that have a real impact on the community. In a clinic, students are supervised by full-time lecturers in work or project cases. Articling students are mentored by part-time lecturers who are experienced Boston-area lawyers. Internships generally offer fewer loans than clinics and require less time. All clinics have a classroom component that accompanies fieldwork. This course is limited to students who have officially applied and been accepted to the International Human Rights Clinic. This course is the fall classroom accompaniment component for students enrolled at the clinic and provides an introduction to essential legal skills, with a focus on those that are relevant to the practice of human rights law. The objective of the course is to help students develop a wide range of skills, including written and oral communication and advocacy, legal research, factual inquiry, witness interviewing, professional responsibility, strategic thinking, and problem solving. The seminar expands the legal skills and substantive legal discussions of the first semester and focuses on national technology policy issues, including national control of technical information, academic privacy and freedom, and emerging cybersecurity regulation. NOTE: The Technology Law Clinic is part of the 6-credit experiential learning requirement. SCORING NOTE: This course does not offer the CR/NC/H option. Students currently enrolled at MIT or BU, as well as start-ups or start-ups in which a currently registered MIT or BU student has an active management role, can apply for free legal assistance through the clinic. Eligible services are not guaranteed, even if they are eligible. The clinic`s ability to accommodate a particular potential client depends on a number of factors, including not only the relevance of the client, but also the clinic`s current workload, conflicts and other professional liability considerations, as well as our assessment of the consistency between the legal services we provide and the needs of the potential client. Students learn how to interview clients and witnesses, draft pleadings and other legal documents, negotiate with lawyers, conduct research, and appear in court. Everything you do will be discussed with a clinical professor. Your teacher will always sue you and make sure you are well prepared, and review and critique your written work and case planning. The seminar introduces students to the legal skills relevant to a practice of modern technology law, including effectively advising innovation clients The seminar also presents a variety of legal issues that arise in research and innovation environments, including advanced topics in the fields of intellectual property, computer crime and data protection. NOTE: The Technology Law Clinic is part of the 6-credit experiential learning requirement. SCORING NOTE: This course does not offer the CR/NC/H option. Boston University School of Law`s Startup Law Clinic is a unique collaboration between BU and MIT, through which BU law students, led by experienced business lawyers, provide campus entrepreneurs with legal advice on a variety of legal issues faced by start-ups. This course is limited to students who have formally applied and have been accepted into the Civil Litigation and Justice program. Pre-trial advocacy is the fall classroom accompaniment component for students in the IRL Civil Litigation and Justice Program and Case ERC Clinics. Pre-trial advocacy is taught in groups of about 14 students with two clinical professors per group. The lessons are dedicated to learning the theories of practice to be used in this field, reinforced by activities and simulations in which students put skills into practice through role-playing games. NOTE: Students enrolling in this component of the clinic may count credits in the 6-credit experiential learning requirement or the professional responsibility requirement.

MIT and BU entrepreneurial and innovator students are advised by BU law students on legal and regulatory compliance issues associated with their academic and extracurricular activities and their efforts to turn ideas into business. The program consists of two clinics: this class is limited to students who have officially applied and been accepted to the International Human Rights Clinic. The clinic`s students work on political issues on behalf of institutional clients representing refugees, forced migrants, immigrants and stateless people. Students work on long-term projects in the field of human rights such as: cooperation with NGOs in advocacy in the United Nations human rights system or in regional bodies (e.g. inter-American and European human rights bodies); work towards durable solutions to combat statelessness and deprivation of citizenship in the Middle East; and the organization of workshops and presentations for key stakeholders from around the world. Students conduct legal and factual research and contacts with partners and the development of project strategies, and prepare written reports and submissions to international and regional bodies. The clinic`s fieldwork may include international travel.
PREREQUISITE/CO-REQUIREMENT: International Human Rights (LAW JD 991). NOTE: The International Human Rights Clinic is one of the 6 loans required for experiential learning. GRADING NOTE: This course does not offer the CR/NC/H option. Recognizing that the acquisition of professional skills and values in a real-world context is an essential part of legal education, BU Law guarantees every interested student at least one clinical opportunity during their second or third year of law. Due to space constraints, clinics and internships are primarily reserved for students in our JD program, although in rare cases an LLM student is allowed to enroll. In this clinic, BU law students work with MIT and BU students to advise and defend their innovative technology projects, businesses, and academic activities. This includes work in the areas of intellectual property, data security, cybersecurity and technological compliance. Students are involved in all aspects of the clinic`s work, including counseling, negotiating, and responding to legal threats, as well as occasional litigation. This clinic is a year-round program. Students currently enrolled in BU or MIT, and business units in which a student currently enrolled in BU or MIT holds an active management role, may be eligible for free legal assistance from the clinic. This course is limited to students who have formally applied and been accepted to the Technology Law Clinic. At the clinic, students are represented by students from MIT and BU working on innovative research and businesses, advising clients on topics such as privacy, intellectual property, cybercrime, cybersecurity, media law, and regulatory compliance.
Students design and negotiate agreements, design compliance programs, advise on the legality of innovative products and services, respond to injunctive threats, and help clients anticipate and prepare for litigation, including pre-litigation support.
