Legal Definition of Semi-Professional

A semi-professional athlete is someone who is paid to play and is therefore not an amateur, but is not a full-time job for the sport, usually because the salary level is too low to earn a decent living based on this source alone, making the athlete not a full-fledged professional athlete. Similarly, the term semi-professional can be applied to an artist such as a photographer or musician who derives some income from his artistic activities, but still has to take a day job to survive. When applied to professional tools and equipment, it refers to products that fall between the amateur and professional levels in terms of quality and cost, although nowadays the term prosumer is often used. Many professions have one or more associated semi-professions. For example, in law, a lawyer would generally be considered a professional, and a paralegal would be considered a semi-professional. Similarly, a dentist would be considered a professional, while a dental hygienist would likely be considered semi-professional. I do not know if it is positive or negative. He can see it both ways, and I`m sure doctors and nurses have strong opinions. The boundaries between profession and semi-profession are often quite blurred within the medical community. Doctors, pharmacists and veterinarians are generally classified as full-time professionals.

However, assistants, including physician assistants, are considered by some to be professionals in their own right and by others to be semi-professionals. Nursing is generally accepted as a profession in its own right in most parts of the United States and Europe, but is still considered a semi-occupation in some parts of the world. The situation is quite controversial in the library world. Many people defend the use of para-professionals and just as many others call for an end to this practice. The trend is not weakening. Who knows what will happen in the future. In addition, semi-occupations have generally been historically identified as “women`s work,” which has exacerbated prejudices against considering them “real” professions, regardless of the amount of skills required. [3] The effects were both positive and negative. On the one hand, the use of less-trained staff allows libraries to pay them less and to spend these budget items on other things. But on the negative side, there are now far fewer jobs for professional librarians, as many of their tasks have been “deprofessionalized.” Many people get their MLS and then work for pennies and get little recognition. The term “semi-profession” is controversial in some fields, particularly when applied to education and medicine. In the classroom, a certified teacher is considered a professional, while assistants and other specialists are often classified as semi-professional.

In many places, the term “paraprofessional” or “parapro” has evolved to describe those pursuing semi-professional employment in education. However, this term does not apply to higher education, where professors are still considered professionals and teaching assistants and lecturers are generally considered semi-professional. Several additional factors are generally accepted to distinguish a half-job from a full-time job. During training, full-time professionals often spend much more time studying the theoretical aspects of their field, while semi-professional training usually focuses almost exclusively on the practical aspects of the field. A semi-professional is likely to have more general and less specialized knowledge and skills in the field. “Semi-professional.” Merriam-Webster.com Dictionary, Merriam-Webster, www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/semiprofessional. Retrieved 5 November 2022. Jobs that fall into the “occupation” category generally include lawyers, teachers, doctors, accountants and similar professions. A semi-occupation is a job that looks a lot like a profession, but generally requires less education or experience.

It also generally involves less responsibility than the entire profession with which it is associated and will likely have a lower rate of pay. I remember when I was younger, there was a clear line between the nurse and the doctor and there wasn`t much change on either side. But it seems that now a number of jobs that doctors used to do have passed to nurses and technicians. Look at the catalog of each nursing school and you will see how many different types of nurses there are and how important and complicated many of their tasks are. I work in a library and we have been dealing with a number of semi-professional topics for years. About 25 years ago, there was pressure to let para-professionals take over many of the tasks assigned to professional librarians. These included cataloguing, reference services, programming and, in some cases, even management. It is common today for a librarian to employ as many paraprofessionals as professionals (those who have earned a master`s degree in library science). Full-fledged professionals can enjoy more respect in the industry.

Semi-professionals, on the other hand, tend to be managed more narrowly. In most semi-professional fields, professionalization efforts are underway. A part-time job generally requires fewer years of training than a full-time job. For example, an accountant or actuary may require both a graduate degree and a national certification. An accounting assistant, on the other hand, may only need a two-year degree or even training and probably doesn`t need to be certified. Semi-professional workers are often exploited and perform tasks that are normally assigned to people with higher degrees or qualifications, but who do not receive wages or benefits. It is essentially a sanctioned subclass. There are people who struggle in semi-professional jobs throughout their careers, who are quite capable of filling jobs that are above their own, but who do not receive promotions because of arbitrary deficiencies. I hope that in the future we can organize ourselves and put an end to this operating system. Whether nursing is rightly considered a semi-profession in today`s world is hotly debated.

[4] [5] Arguments in favour of maintaining nursing as a semi-occupation include tolerance of part-time work and the traditional subordination of nursing to medicine in treatment decisions. [5] The arguments in favour of examining nursing as a profession rather than a semi-profession are the requirements for advanced post-secondary education, formal accreditation as a nurse, self-regulation, and the existence of formal codes of professional ethics. I think the increase in semi-professional workers is best seen in the healthcare industry. Although I do not work in the health field, this change has also become obvious to an outsider. One group particularly associated with the term, the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (AACTE), has published a list of twelve checkpoints that they believe help define a semi-profession.

[6] Semi-occupation is an occupation that requires advanced knowledge and skills, but is not generally considered a true occupation. Traditional examples of semi-professions include social work, journalism, library science, teaching, and nursing. [1] These fields often have less clear barriers to entry than traditional professions such as law and medicine, and their practitioners often lack the level of control over their own work traditionally associated with professionals such as doctors and lawyers.
